Program Guide Access
The Program Guide is comprised of organizations, programs, and individuals interested in motivating girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The purpose of this guide is to help organizations and individuals network, share resources, and collaborate on STEM-related projects for girls.

| EXCITE! | Kansas State University | EXCITE! is designed to introduce young high school women to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. EXCITE! is a year round program that offers girls in the 9th - 11th grades opportunities on and off campus. Girls entering 9th and 10th grades in the fall have the chance to participate in a four-day hands-on residential science and engineering camp held on the K-State campus in Manhattan, KS. The Girls Night Out Special Overnight is a jam-packed experience filled with hands-on activities, rocketry, robotics, and simulator rotations! Workshops are held on Saturdays twice a year, during National Chemistry (October) and Girl Scout Weeks (March), on the University of Missouri~Columbia (MU) campus. Three different workshops — “Case of the Unsigned Letter”, “Fun with Polymers”, and “Chemistry of Color” — rotate annually. This format allows junior Girl Scouts (fourth through sixth graders) from the Heart of Missouri Council to attend a different program every year. | Upward Bound Math Science Regional Center | Wichita State University | The Upward Bound Math Science Regional Center is 100% federally funded and hosted by Wichita State University, located in Wichita, Kansas. With the support of WSU and the cooperation of schools throughout Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, and Missouri, the Program is designed to recruit and serve 50 students entering grades nine through twelve that have limited family incomes and have the potential to be the first in their families to complete a four-year degree. The major objective of the Math and Science Center is to prepare motivated Math and Science students for the college experience, and to demonstrate the relationship between higher education, responsibility to community ad respect for oneself and others. Naturally, the academic aspect of the program is critical and is held to the highest standard. Equally important, however, is a student’s ability to contribute to the scholastic and social communities of which he is apart. Students are encouraged to participate in both an academic year component as well as summer, residential component. During the academic year, regional students maintain contact with the UBMS office and attend workshops presented in their home communities. Contact usually takes place via the internet, toll free phone number or by a staff member visiting a students home school. Students that live in the Wichita Metropolitan area participate in the Leadership Academy. The Academy attempts to prepare UBMS students for community leadership, both socially and academically. Students participate in bi-weekly Academy Seminars to sharpen their skills through community service, guest speakers, action planning, presentations and academic and post-secondary planning. Students in need of academic assistance also attend tutoring sessions on a weekly basis. The Center’s six-week summer program is specifically designed to assist youth who have the potential to complete a four-year degree in a math or science related field discover their aptitude and decide a course of action. The ultimate goal is to have students return to their schools and communities with a renewed interest in science, math, and computer technology. The summer session is not to be consider your typical “summer camp.” It is an educational program designed to provide students with the opportunity for academic enrichment in a college setting. For six weeks participants attend a variety of courses developed to foster critical thinking, research and experimentation, and the art of presentation. All courses are hands-on in nature. The curriculum includes core areas of study such as Pre-Engineering, Medical Sciences, and Environmental Studies. Students also enroll in a skill appropriate math course and an electronic media class. Students’ academic enrichment is supplemented with field trips, cultural and social activities, career and academic counseling, guest speakers and leadership skill development. During their six-week stay, students are housed in the WSU Residence Halls. In addition, the YSP targets St. Louis City Public High School teachers with resources that facilitate inquiry-based learning in the classroom. Each year the program reaches hundreds of high and middle school students and teachers in the St. Louis City Public Schools. A unique feature of the program is that it is entirely run by student and postdoctoral volunteers from the School of Medicine and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
