MRU Forum (completed) at K-State, September 16, 2006
The MRU forum at K-State was enjoyed by 50 participants on September 16, 2006. The group networked together and examples were given of possible mini-grants. Peggy Veatch, a teacher from Thayer High School discussed "STEM Academy in Rural Thayer Missouri". This program is partly funded by a MRU Mini-grant. Susan Arnold Christian, Outreach Coordinator at Kansas State University, discussed the "Grow" and "Excite" Programs at K-State. Student Champions Board members Anna Rogers and Nandini Sarma also gave very interesting talks from a student's point of view. Sheryl Tucker from the University of Missouri, Columbia talked about her "Magic of Chemistry" program which has been nationally recognized by the American Chemical Society and the Girl Scouts. Sherry Cook and Terri Johnson talked about the Quirkles project. They discussed their books and how the Quirkles stories teach or reinforce phonetic sounds that serve as building blocks for reading while also making science more fun to learn
